Jane Gardam: Old Filth and its sequels, The Man in the Wooden Hat and the recently-published Last Friends will be presented by Jim Spence and Kathie Spence.
The English novelist Jane Gardam has been described as the laureate of the demise of the British Empire. These three novels can be read independently but starting with Old Filth tell from different points of view the story of Edward Feathers (Old “Filth”, i.e. Failed In London, Try Hong Kong), a retired barrister, his wife Betty and his arch-enemy Tony Veneering. Our duo-presenters, Massey Senior Fellow the Hon. James Spence, of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and Quadrangle member Kathie Spence may also have different points of view about the novels.
