Dear Members of the Massey community, Chers collègues,
Thank you for the many messages about the passing of Christine Karcza. Christine was integral in the development of Massey College’s Accessibility policies and helping the College identify, prevent and discover ways to remove barriers to participation in our programs. Last year, the College established a fund in honour of Hugh Segal’s retirement dedicated to helping remove some of these barriers. This fund will underwrite the renovation of two ground floor suites to be fully wheelchair accessible. Hugh has asked that one of these suites be named in Christine’s honour. Additionally, the Christine Karcza Fund has been created to provide support to Junior Fellows with disabilities. If you would like to participate in this fund, or for more information, please contact our Director of Advancement, Catherine Fowler cfowler@masseycollege.ca. We will celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd in her honour as well.

I am very pleased to announce that Joel William Vaughan will join Massey College this Fall in the position of College Printer, Tours & Educational Programming in the Robertson Davies Library’s Bibliography Room.
Joel is currently a Doctoral student in English Literature at the University of Toronto, co-enrolled in the Book History/Print Culture Collaborative Specialization (BHPC). He also holds a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University where he was co-enrolled in the Artist in Community Education Program. Joel began working with us in the Bibliography Room in 2015, when he trained as a BHPC Printing Apprentice with the former College Printer, Nelson Adams, and then apprenticed with our Bookbinder, Don Taylor, learning the fundamentals of preservation, restoration, binding, and archival box-making. In addition to leading tours and demonstrations on the printing presses, and informational sessions about papermaking and bookbinding, he has been engaged over the last three years in the largest printing project ever attempted in the Bibliography Room: creating a typographic facsimile of William Blake’s 1791 The French Revolution.
Working closely with our Lead Printer and Printing Historian, Stephen Sword, Joel will be responsible for the design and planning of courses, workshops and tours in the Bibliography Room for classes within and outside of the University of Toronto, the College’s printing apprenticeship programs, and the maintenance and preservation of the College’s 19th century printing presses and related equipment.
Joel brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and talent to this newly created role at the College. Please join us in welcoming Joel to the staff of Massey College!
Finally, we are working to create a Directory of our community members with photographs. We have arranged for four photography sessions at the College – please book a time to come and have your picture taken. We are asking community members to book their 5-minute appointment with the photographer in advance. These photos will be used in our directory, will help new members at the college get to know each other and be used to create the College group picture which is not possible this year. You can also send us a picture of yourself by September 11th.
Please note that I have reserved weekly appointments all throughout September to meet with community members. Sign up here to book a time to come and see me.
If you haven’t already done so, please take a look at our COVID-19 protocol for Massey College community members, and make sure to consult the calendar on our website for updates and watch for further details on how to register to our events.
I am busy preparing to teach a new course, Pandemics and the Law, and am very much looking forward to our fall program. Warm wishes for the coming term,
Nathalie
