Although it might not look like it outside, spring is almost here – and I’m pleased to share with you a look ahead to programming for the remainder of the month. A reminder of the 60th Anniversary Gala Celebrating the William Southam Journalism Fellowships will take place on Saturday April 23rd. In order to accommodate all of the interest we’ve received, we will be hosting the dinner and keynote at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon in the Toronto Reference Library. Join internationally renowned bassist Rich Brown, in conversation with Junior Fellow Sam Little, as they discuss modern extemporizations in jazz. Rich’s career history, and his personal take on music, draw from a diverse pool of influences to create a unique style of jazz that is truly his own. He will perform a few of his solo pieces and, if we’re lucky, a collaborative piece with Sam.

On Wednesday, March 23rd from 12:30-2:00pm ET Junior Fellows are invited to attend the first Massey Artists Circle event. Massey Artists Circle aims to create a rich dialogue between key figures in the arts and Junior Fellows, and to increase the visibility of the arts at Massey. Across the university term, the Massey Artists Circle invites artists, journalists and cultural leaders to talk about their backgrounds, their creations, and the role of arts in their lives and in contemporary Canadian society. The group is guided by Quadrangle Soceity Members Sara Angel and Peter Herndorf.

Junior Fellow Maeve Palmer will perform at the Norcop & Koldofsky Winners’ Recital taking place on Thursday March 24th at 12:10pm ET. Maeve is the 2021 recipient of the Jim and Charlotte Norcop Prize in Song, and will be presenting the “Winners’ Recital” with pianist Joel Goodfellow, the 2021 winner of the Gwendolyn Williams Koldofsky Prize in Accompanying.
