Senior Fellow Martin L. Friedland’s work and legacy was honoured last week with a seminar and reception on the occasion of his 90th birthday. I had the pleasure to attend and listen to the warm reminiscences of his colleagues and friends, Senior FEllows Mayo Moran and Visitor J. Robert S. Prichard. A wonderful celebration of a lifetime of scholarship.

What Should We Be Doing to Protect Journalists Online? Earlier this year, journalists in Canada, predominantly women of colour, reported being harassed online in what appeared to be a coordinated campaign. Some were sent death and rape threats.
While online attacks on journalists aren’t new, the Canadian Association of Journalists said they have reached a “fever pitch,” made worse by the pandemic, which has polarized communities and pushed journalists deeper online for their jobs. The threats are effectively silencing journalists — many now struggle with mental health challenges and some have quit journalism altogether.
Join Shree Paradkar, Columnist and internal ombud at the Toronto Star, Brodie Fenlon EIC and Executive Director for daily news at CBC, Sharbil Nammour, Global Head of Security – VICE Media and Steph Weschler, Managing Editor of J-Source.
7:45 PM, Upper Library. Junior Common Room after the panel.
