Dear friends of Massey College , chers collègues,   

Senior Fellow and Chair of the Anti-Black Racism Council at Massey, the Honourable Michael Tulloch has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of Ontario and President of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Congratulations! Read the press release here. It was wonderful to attend the swearing in last Friday, a momentous and historical occasion.  

 The University of King’s College will honour Senior Fellow and Senior Resident Kim Kierans for her extraordinary professional accomplishments and contributions to public service at the King’s 233 Encaenia on May 25 and bestow an honorary degree. Congratulations Kim! 

We are busy preparing for the celebration of Massey College’s 60th anniversary,  mark your calendars or register now for Thursday, September 28, when you are invited to celebrate 60 years of our unique community at a very special High Table – it will be a fabulous event celebrating the past, present and future of Massey. Book Launch – Systemic Islamophobia in Canada: A Research Agenda, edited by Senior Fellow Anver M. Emon 

Systemic Islamophobia in Canada presents critical perspectives on systemic Islamophobia in Canadian politics, law, and society, and maps areas for future research and inquiry. The authors consist of both scholars and professionals who encounter in the ordinary course of their work the – sometimes banal, sometimes surprising – operation of systemic Islamophobia. Centering the lived realities of Muslims primarily in Canada, but internationally as well, the contributors identify the limits of democratic accountability in the operation of our shared institutions of government.

Everyone is welcome to join the seder, a Massey tradition of gathering over traditional Passover foods. This is in honour of Rose Wolfe – the former Chancellor of UofT and former Visitor of Massey College who passed away 6 years ago. Rabbi Yael Splansky will lead the seder.

Science @ Massey Lunch – Curling: A Whole Different View on the Science of Rocks and Frozen Water 

April 5 | 12:30pm 

Join Science at Massey for a lunch with Matt Glandfield, the Director of Business Operations at Massey College. When not at the college, Matt is active in the sport of curling having recently competed on the provincial level and on the World Curling Tour. Currently, he is the President of the High Park Club in Toronto and a representative of the Ontario Curling Federation.

Massey Dialogues – The Politics of Play: Digital Games in the Canadian Context

Our panel of game scholars, makers, and players including Prof Christopher Young, Prof Gerald Voorhees and Kaelan Doyle Myerscough will convene to discuss Canada’s role as one of the most prominent game-producing nations in the world, ranking third behind the United States and Japan. This eminence is reflected notonly in Canada’s status as home to major AAA gaming studios, but also the rise of Canadian video game live-streaming celebrities and Canadian-based gaming non-profits, who have been making  gaming careers more accessible to women, queer folk and BIPOC for more than a decade

Acting Librarian at Massey, Chana Algarvio had an article published in the Papers of the Bibliographic Society of Canada.

Junior Fellow Florence Ashley will join the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law as a tenure-track assistant professor. Congratulations Florence! 

To celebrate World Water Day last week, Senior Fellow Tom Axworthy co-wrote an article in the Globe and Mail urging the Federal government to implement its long-promised Canada Water Agency – read it here.

Professor Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta, PhD, MBBS, FRCPCH, FAAP, FRS, Founding Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development and the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health at the Aga Khan University and Co-Director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, is the recipient of the 2023 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. Please see attached for more information. 

Junior Fellow Giancarlo Da-Ré co-authored an article on Lula’s return in Brazil, read it here. Giancarlo also co-authored an op-ed in the Globe and Mail, read it here.

Senior Fellow Ann Jervis has published a new book – Paul and Time: Life in the Temporality of Christ.  Professor Jervis will launch the book as the upcoming Society of Biblical Literature Conference in San Antonio, TX. Copies of the book can be purchased through the publisher’s website here, or on Amazon.
