Book discussion: Journalists’ autonomy and accountability – inspired by Ivor Shapiro’s forthcoming book.

Join the discussion inspired by Ivor Shapiro’s forthcoming book “The Disputed Freedoms of a Disrupted Press,” which explores the origins, connections, and contradictions  amongst divergent understandings of press freedom around the world. Author Ivor Shapiro will be in conversation with Journalists Karyn Pugliese, John Fraser and myself.

Aga Khan X Massey College – Seeing Through Translations 

June 3 | 2:00pm 

Rumi’s work has been translated all over the world and with each translation, a new perspective is uncovered. Join Anishinaabemowin teacher, Ninaatig Philip Staats Pangowish, Associate Teaching Professor in Arabic, Dr. Nargis Virani, and visual artist, Erdem Taşdelen as they explore the difficulty of capturing Rumi’s essence and how different languages contextualize each translation. In this talk, moderated by Junior Fellow, Thomas Ayouti, they will reflect on  translation  processes and discuss the connection between language, culture and perspective on the world. 


Massey College Alumni Association Annual General Meeting and BBQ 

July 8 | 4:00-7:00pm 

To kick off our 60th Anniversary Celebrations, the Alumni Council invites everyone to attend the summer BBQ and AGM! They are seeking new Council members, so please consider getting involved. There will be virtual access to the AGM for those who cannot attend in person. Family and guests are welcome to the BBQ.

Kriegsfilm Round 2 

Kriegsfilme – Massey’s war movie club will be hosting a big 60th anniversary event in the fall. In the lead-up to the event, they have designed a bracket system for the community to vote for which movie you’d like to see. Everyone is invited to participate.

AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS 

Senior Resident Kim Kierans was awarded an Honourary Doctoris in Jure Civili from the University of King’s College in Halifax last week. Senior Fellow Zainub Verjee will receive an honourary doctorate from University of Victoria in recognition of her notable achievements in scholarship, research, teaching and public service at a convocation ceremony on June 16.  Congratulations both.
