So many members of the Massey community are struggling right now as the Israel – Hamas war continues. To all whose families and friends are touched, to all who are mourning and to all who experience deep fear, sadness and anxieties, I send my thoughts and support. We are living through difficult and heart wrenching weeks. Let’s hope for better times. 


On Friday night, we will have the honour of hosting the new Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, The Honourable Arif Virani, at the High Table for Islamic Heritage month. Please join us, reception 6:00pm, dinner at 6:30pm in hall. Please RSVP by October 25 at 2:30 pm.

Alumni are always welcome to dine in Ondaatje Hall and throughout the year we host special formal dinners celebrating past alumni cohorts. All are welcome to come and dine with old friends and make some new ones! Our first dinner will be for the 1963-1975 cohort on Wednesday, November 29.

Massey Grand Rounds invites you to breakfast with former Canada Gairdner Global Health Awardee Dr. Cesar Victora, MD PhD. Please join from 7:30-9:30am in the Private Dining Room. 

Dr. Victora’s research investigates maternal and child health and nutrition, breastfeeding, birth cohorts, social inequalities, and evaluation of health services. We encourage attendance from all fields, including health policy, global affairs, medicine, women and gender studies.

26 OCT 5:00-6:30pm : Massey Dialogues – Israel-Palestine: Is There A Solution to Political Dysfunction and Horrific Violence?

The first Massey Dialogues of the year begins with a discussion on Israel-Palestine with the Canada’s former Ambassador to Israel Jon Allen in conversation with Palestinian Ph.D. candidate at UofT’s Post-Conflict Reintegration Lab Khalil Al-Wazir, Junior Fellow Anne-Marie Fowler and Israeli lawyer Lior Pollack. Moderated by Senior Fellow Michael Valpy.

Join us for lunch, followed by an interview between CBC Ideas Producer Chris Wodskou and Senior Fellow and Massey Chair in Human Rights, Payam Akhavan as they explore Akhavan’s 2017 lecture In Search of a Better World: A Human Rights Odyssey – a powerful and essential work on the major human rights struggles of our times.

03 NOV 11:45am – 2:00pm : CBC Massey Lectures Lunch 

Senior Fellow Tanya Talaga will discuss her 2018 Lecture All Our Relations: Finding a Path Forward with the host of CBC Ideas, Nahlah Ayed. Based on her Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy series, All Our Relations, explores the alarming rise of youth suicide in Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond. The Lecture has been described as a powerful call for action, justice and a better, more equitable world for all Indigenous Peoples. 

06 NOV 11:45am – 2:00pm : CBC Massey Lectures Lunch

Senior Fellow Sally Armstrong will discuss her 2019 Lecture Power Shift: The Longest Revolution with Philip Coulter, Producer with CBC Ideas. Power Shift argued that the future of humanity depends on strengthening the status of women and girls.

06 NOV 5:00pm : CBC Massey Lectures Series

Senior Fellow Michael Ignatieff will be interviewed by Paul Kennedy – former host of CBC Ideas to explore Ignatieff’s 2000 Lecture The Rights of Revolution.

04 NOV 10:00am-12:30pm : Bike Ride: Cycling Infrastructure Planning and Road Safety Strategies

Environmentalist-in-Residence Sir Graham Watson and Junior Fellow and Masters of Science in Planning student Swati Panwar will take you on a guided bike tour through downtown, where you can gain insights into Toronto’s cycling infrastructure planning and discover the strategies urban planners employ to improve road safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.

08 NOV 1:00-5:00pm : Ursula Franklin Forum on Science, Engineering and Society

You are invited to the 8th annual forum – Origins of Life: Looking at Life from Both Sides Now. No topic has been tackled from more angles – from cosmology, biology, physics and chemistry, to the moral, philosophical and artistic perspectives.  

Join us for a wide-ranging event a lecture by Dr. Nita Sahai of the University of Akron, speaking from the science perspective, followed by a panel discussing the aesthetic and artistic perspective.

11 NOV 2:00-4:00pm : Journeying Through Song: Ojibwe Singing with Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation

Please join us in the quadrangle to lift your voice in song with Ojibwe Elder, Storyteller, and Song Keeper, Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Elder Sault will lead us in an interactive workshop on Ojibwe singing and the dynamic being of song within Indigenous life and traditions.

IN MEMORIAM

  • Sadly, Senior Fellow George Baird passed away last week. George was an architect, theorist, educator serving as Dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto from 2004-2009. He was a wonderful and active Massey community member. My condolences to his family. Read about his career.
     
  • Senior Fellow Nathalie Zemon Davis passed away last week – a social and cultural historian whose research focused on lives of marginalized figures. She was a cherished member of our community, and will be missed by Fellows and staff alike. Please join me in sending condolences to her family. There is a wonderful piece in the New York Times outlining her extraordinary life and legacy.

  • Junior Fellow Otutu Chukwu has been selected as one of Exploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy’s “Top Reviewers” for the year 2023.  
  • William Southam Journalism Fellow alum Omayra Issa won two Prairie Region Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards for Overall Digital Excellence and Best Opinion for Black on the Prairies, a CBC series that she led and produced. 
  • William Southam Journalism Fellow alumni Duncan McCue and Martha Troian won a national RTDNA award for their podcast, Kuper Island.  
  • Junior Fellow alum Jaisie Sin (Ph.D. Faculty of Information) successfully defended her thesis, Socially Conscious Design: Methods Towards Designing Inclusive Voice User Interfaces for Older Adults.

  • Senior Fellow Akwasi Owusu-Bempah talks about the impact of the legalization of cannabis on Canada’s justice system on CBC Radio.
  • Junior Fellow Leighton Schreyer’s essay, The Closeted Curriculum was accepted for publication in Academic Medicine.  
  • Senior Fellow Neil Seeman wrote a poem about Anne Frank included in the National Post.

  • Tamara Thermitus wrote an essay (en françias) No reconciliation without true recognition. She mentions our Indigenous Heritage High Table which inspired her to write the essay.
