This past Saturday we had a delightful Nowruz celebration at Massey in the Junior Common Room with music, singing, poetry and dancing together with very tasty food! Thanks to Junior Fellows Setayesh Yazdani and Mohaddeseh Abdolhosseini and many others for the organization and support. 

A reminder that the Massey is Lunch program continues this month. Sign up here to be paired with Junior Fellows for lunch – we have spaces available on April 11, 18 and 25 – it is an easy way to connect with our Junior Fellowship over a great meal in Ondaatje Hall.

APRIL 7 | Holi Celebration 

Holi is the “Indian Festival of Colours” that marks the start of spring and is a time to get together, play with colours, and celebrate good times! Holi has been an annual Massey event for the past several years, and the Junior Fellows are organizing the event for the whole community to continue this tradition.

Please wear old, used clothing of light or dark colours for the colours. Even if you can’t join for the colours, please come for food and fun activities. RSVP.


April 10 | Senior Fellow Luncheon with Kim Kierans – Journalism: To serve the public interest or make widgets? 

Media climate change has created news deserts across Canada and threatens the democratic health of communities. How can citizens make informed decisions when there’s no independent coverage of municipal governments, school boards and institutions? Senior Resident Kim Kierans has documented the seismic changes in the media industry since 1970 in her forthcoming book Journalism for the Public Good: The Michener Awards at 50 (Bighorn Books, UCP, May 2024). She traces the industry’s decline through the lens of 50 years of award-winning journalism in the public interest. Kim will be in conversation with Journalism Fellow Julia Caron. April 10 | Massey Dialogues – Plastics Policy in Canada  

This conversation will delve into what Canada is doing on the plastics front with a focus on extended producer responsibility, Canada’s ban on single-use items, the myth of recycling, and the international agreement on plastic pollution currently being negotiated as part of UNEP. Dr. Chelsea Rochman (Professor at UofT), MP Julie Dabrusin (Member of Parliament for Toronto-Danforth), and Jo-Anne St. Godard (Executive Director of Circular Innovation Council) will join Alum Alice Zhu (moderator) on this important issue.
