At the Canadian Journalism Foundation Gala in Toronto last week, we announced the incoming 2024-2025 William Southam Journalism Fellows, and we look forward to welcoming:

CJFE / Massey College Fellow
Mostafa Al-a’sar is an Egyptian multidisciplinary journalist, researcher, human rights defender, and former political prisoner who spent nearly four years behind bars in Egypt for his journalistic work. Mostafa arrived in Toronto earlier this year under Canada’s “human rights defender” refugee program.

St. Clair Balfour Fellow
Ashley Fitzpatrick is a journalist based in Newfoundland and Labrador, with more than 15 years of experience in local and regional news. Her career to date includes more than 10 years writing with The Telegram in St. John’s. Currently a staff writer with Atlantic Business Magazine, her work has also appeared with outlets including The Independent, allNewfoundlandLabrador, and CBC.

Webster McConnell Fellow
Jonathan Goldsbie
 writes and talks about politics, media, power, and the intersections between those things. Since 2017, he’s been an editor at Canadaland, chronicling the country’s media and ascendant far right, and co-hosting its Ontario politics podcast, Wag the Doug.

William Southam Journalism Fellow
Shree Paradkar 
is a Toronto Star columnist, as well as racial justice and equity advocate. She is winner of two Amnesty Awards for Human Rights reporting and the Racial Justice in Media award by the Urban Alliance of Race Relations.

Gordon N. Fisher / JHR Fellow
Beatrice Senadju 
is an award-winning Broadcast Journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). With over ten years of experience, Beatrice has risen through the ranks to become an Editor. Beatrice is the recipient of the 2022 Ghana Leadership Awards Journalist of the Year as well as the Young Africa Media Centre’s Journalist of the Year Award in Disability Reporting.

We look forward to engaging with these journalists and participating with them in the journey of learning, reflection and renewal that is the William Southam Journalism Program.

LOWER LIBRARY EXHIBIT

There is a new exhibition offering an introduction to the Robertson Davies Library and showcasing items from its exceptional rare book collection, focused on the history of the book. Please drop by this week to see the exhibition, or email Acting Librarian Kathryn Middleton to arrange a guided tour for yourself or a small group.


CHANGE OF DATE

The First Formal Dinner in Ondaatje Hall will be a week earlier on September 9.

Formal dinners are Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the term. They are an excellent way to get to know Junior Fellows and other members of the community over an outstanding meal. Be sure to make it part of your regular routine at the College.

AWARDS and APPOINTMENTS

  • Junior Fellows Alec Krawciw (Robotics) and David Li (Biomedical Engineering) were awarded the 2024 Vanier Scholarships.
  • Senior Fellow David Lie has been appointed to U of T’s Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI). David Lie is a professor at the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Secure and Reliable Systems. He also holds cross-appointments in the Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Law at U of T, and he’s an Associate Director at U of T’s Data Sciences Institute, a Massey College Senior Fellow, and a Faculty Affiliate with the Vector Institute. Read more here.
  • Junior Fellow Raylene Mitchell was appointed to the SevenGen Energy Council.
  • Junior Fellows Erina Moon, Faculty of Information and Fernando Yánez, Department of Computer Science are 2024 Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society fellowship recipients. 
  • Senior Fellow John Ralston Saul will receive an Honorary Degree: Doctor of Laws from York University this week.
  • Senior Fellow Haroon Siddiqui received an honorary doctorate from Toronto Metropolitan University. Read the remarks shared by Dean Charles Falzon of the Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University.
  • Alumni Shane Saunderson has joined McMaster University as Assistant Professor in Information Systems – congratulations, Shane!
  • Alum Andrew T. Lam was named the Family Medicine Resident of the Year by the Ontario College of Family Physicians.

  • Senior Fellow Miriam Diamond comments on U of T’s youngest graduating student in The Star.
  • Senior Fellow Jacqueline Feke gave a guest lecture at the University of Chicago called “Are We Doomed?” The New Yorker wrote an article on the class.
  • Senior Fellow Harry LaForme was interviewed on trailblazing Indigenous legal firsts in the CBC.
  • Junior Fellow Dongwoo Kim published an article in the U of T Law Review: Artificial Intelligence Governance through Communicative Action.
  • Alumni Willem Mass on Why we should care about the the European Parliament Elections in The Winnipeg Free Press.
  • Senior Fellow Kumar Murty‘s forthcoming book, The Science of Human Possibilities (expected out later this summer), made the Next Big Idea Club’s Season 25 “must-reads” list! Mention of Kumar’s book as a “must-read” is noted at the link below, where you can also find an Amazon pre-order page.
  • Quadrangle Society Member Rose Patten was celebrated for her exceptional leadership as Chancellor of U of T.

OPPORTUNITIES 

Attention Junior FellowsSwift Medical is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow for a two-year project. The fellow will work on implementation science surrounding the adoption of AI in wound care and outcomes evaluation.
