I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful long weekend! We have an exciting lineup of thought-provoking programming this week. This afternoon, join us for the Massey Dialogues as we explore the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence in our daily lives. On Wednesday, the Music Salon will delve into the rich tradition of Indigenous song. This Friday, you are invited to join us at the Indigenous Heritage High Table. We will convene to celebrate Indigenous peoples and cultured in our College community and beyond. Gather over a delicious meal as we introduce new fellows, scholars, and community members. RSVP by October 16 at 6:00pm. There’s something for everyone—looking forward to seeing you there!

Our Health & Wellness Committee Chair Heywot Tadesse and Environmentalist-in-Residence Sir Graham Watson invite you to join them in a two-hour bike ride designed to stretch our muscles and your thinking about urban design with cyclists in mind. The ride will follow a carefully chosen route along the bike lanes to illustrate the potential for the crucial switch needed from fossil-fuel to human-powered transportation in urban areas with the participation of an urban planner.

The 2024 CBC Massey Lectures, What I Mean to Say: Remaking Conversation in Our Time by Professor Ian Williams takes place across Canada in this month. Join the final stop in Toronto at Koerner Hall.

The Massey Lectures are co-sponsored by CBC Radio, House of Anansi Press, and Massey College in the University of Toronto. The series was created in honour of the Right Honourable Vincent Massey, former Governor General of Canada, and was inaugurated in 1961 to provide a forum on radio where major contemporary thinkers could address important issues of our time.

The lectures will be broadcast in November 2024 as part of CBC Radio’s Ideas series.

AWARDS

  • Senior Fellow Mark Bonham will receive an Honourary Doctorate from Toronto Metropolitan University this week for his work in elevating Casey House into a global leader in HIV/AIDS care. He also helped create the Friends of Ruby Home, a transitional house for LGBTQI2S young people. 
  • William Southam Journalism Fellow Shree Paradkar has been awarded the 2024 Ken Filkow Price for advancing freedom of expression. More information here.

  • Last year, Junior Fellow Obinna Ezeani was one of eight international students featured in the University of Toronto’s upcoming documentary First 48 Hours. This film explores the experiences of international students as they journey from their home countries to Canada and navigate their first 48 hours after arrival. The documentary will be released on November 1—watch the trailer here. Recently, Obinna appeared on CP24 Breakfast to share more about his experiences. You can watch his segment here.
  • Senior Fellow Anthony Feinstein has published a new book entitled Moral Courage: 19 Profiles of Investigative Journalists. Read about the book here. Anthony will also participate in an upcoming Globe and Mail event, on November 4. Register to attend for free, here.
  • Senior Fellow Shoshanna Saxe is quoted in The Pointer on the Ford proposal for a tunnel under the 401.
  • Senior Fellow David Zimmer represented Liberal International (UK) at the recent United Nations General Assembly Plenary Meeting on the “Existential Threats Posed by Climate Induced Sea Level Rise”. He is the Chair of Liberal International’s Climate Justice Committee.
