We are very pleased to announce that the Governing Board has approved the nomination of J. Robert S. Prichard, OC, OOnt, LLD as Massey College’s Visitor effective January 1, 2021. The Visitor fulfills important constitutional and ceremonial functions for the College and supports the Principal. Rob Prichard is President Emeritus of the University of Toronto and is currently Chair of Torys LLP and Chair of the Board of the Hospital for Sick Children of Toronto. He has had a lifelong association with the University as a student, professor, dean, president and volunteer and has been a Senior Fellow at Massey College since 1990.
Our acting Chair of the Governing Board, Craig Thorburn, remarked: “We are delighted to welcome Rob as our new Visitor. He brings to the position a wealth of expertise and a lifelong passion for higher education. He will help Massey College and the Principal in significant ways, strengthening relationships with both the broader community and the University of Toronto. He will be a wonderful ambassador for the College.”
Of his appointment, Mr. Pritchard states “I am greatly honoured to succeed two Canadians of the first rank, the Rt Hon Beverley McLachlin and previously, the Hon Hal Jackman, as Visitor of Massey College. They served Massey with great distinction. Massey College is a shining jewel at the heart of the University of Toronto, attracting remarkable talent from across the University and the broader community, creating an exceptional intellectual and academic community able to address the crucial issues of our time and advance the public good. Massey is committed to being a place of inclusive excellence dedicated to fostering the learning and growth of the Junior Fellows who are at the center of the College’s mission and contribute so richly to it. It will be a pleasure to work with the Principal to advance the College and all its members. I very much look forward to engaging in common cause with the Junior and Senior Fellows and the members of the Quadrangle Society to realize the fullest possibilities of Massey College.“
We are very happy that Rob Prichard has agreed to help the College for this next phase of its history as it seeks to engage its community in dialogue to address fundamental issues facing our society, from the response to the pandemic and health promotion, to climate change, social and economic inequalities, justice and democracy.
