The most controversial aspect of modern opera is how a production of an 18th or 19th century opera should now be staged. Under the direction of Alexander Neef, the Canadian Opera Company appears to be presenting an increasing number of “updated” stagings. Some of these, for example the two recent Gluck operas (“Orfeo ed Euridice” and “Iphigénie en Tauride” staged by Robert Carsen) have been universally admired. Others, such as the recent “Aida” and “Un Ballo in Maschera” have sparked more mixed reactions and controversy. What are the optimal ingredients of modern operatic stagings?
Mr. Neef will discuss the decision-making process he uses when engaging Stage Directors for productions and outline his views on the future direction of Opera in the 21st Century.
