Iam very pleased to announce that Giller Prize-winning author and poet Souvankham Thammavongsa is this year’s Jack McClelland Writer-in-Residence. Souvankham will offer a non-credit poetry and short story workshop in the winter term that is open to all community members. Please visit U of T Department of English website for application instructions.

Journalists in Canada are under increasing scrutiny for how we cover far-right groups, fringe political parties and protests against public health measures. How to inform the public without giving a platform to misinformation?

ClimateAction Concert on November 12th at 4:00pm ET.  

We are excited to be joining the Climate Music Project @theclimatemusicproject and Friday Nights with Yury Revitch @fnights_official for their bi-continental event, “A Musical Call for Climate Action,” which merges live performances in San Francisco and Vienna, and is available to a global audience via streaming.  Join us on Friday, November 12th from 2:00-4:00pm ET for a truly moving climate music experience in the Upper Library where members of our community can join together to watch this unique event.

On Tuesday, November 16th at 7:00pm ET you’re invited to a special screening of Senior Fellow Anthony Feinstein’s new film A Quiet Courage: Afghan journalists in a time of terror. 

This documentary emerged from Dr. Feinstein’s research, starting in 2018, into the effects of trauma among Afghan journalists. In it, the psychiatrist and University of Toronto professor captures the experiences of six Afghan journalists, including the dangers they confronted, the psychological impact of their exposure to extraordinary levels of threat and violence, and their hopes for the future of their country.

Please join Massey Grand Rounds as we discuss the biomedical and social future of the post-COVID world, in our 2021 Symposium, “Shaping our Post-Pandemic Future” on November 17. The Symposium will feature  Dr. Samira Mubareka, 2021 Janet Rossant Lecturer, on the viral relationship between humans and animals, Dr. Allison McGeer on the future pandemic applications of mRNA vaccines, and Dr. Kaveh Shojania on shaping research agendas in relation to anticipated crises. Questions & Answers will be addressed throughout the Symposium.

Congratulations to Senior Fellow Anita Anand, newly appointed Minister of Defence for Canada 

Alum Christine Koch’s painting Never Melting Ice (2015, 6’ x 20’, in the Collection of Global Affairs Canada) is currently being exhibited in the Canadian Pavillion in Expo 2020 Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The exhibition is open to the world until March 31, 2022.   

Alum Olugbenga Olubanjo is the first of community member nominated and featured by the anti-Black racism committee. His full profile, is up on our website here.  

Junior Fellow Meave Palmer recently performed at Koerner Hall with New Music Concerts she sang last on the program – and a recording of her performance is up online, here
