Massey College News and Events

Welcome to September! The kitchen is open and the Junior Fellows, Journalism Fellows, Senior Residents and Visiting Scholars are making themselves at home at Massey. I note that the bar in the Junior Common Room will be open weekdays from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.    

What follows is a summary of our September programming, from High Tables to celebrating print culture and the arts in memory of Ivan Mcfarlane, the Massey Dialogues to our Ethics Series, the Walter Gordon Symposium, Ursula Franklin Forum, Janet Rossant Lectureship and more. Today, tomorrow and Friday (September 7, 8 and 9th) we will have a photographer on-site to take headshots. Come out and get a photo taken and make sure to update your Massey College profile – it is a good way for those in the community to become familiar with one another.

Our first Massey Dialogues will look into Preparing for the Future Workplace on Wednesday, September 14th from 4:00-5:00pm. We are joined by Executive Coach and Advisor for Harvard Business Review Sheila Goldgrab, Biomedical Engineering student and Junior Fellow Evan Davison-Kotler and Principal Nathalie Des Rosiers. Moderated by pharmaceutical scientist and Junior Fellow Chukwunonso Nwabufo.

The first event in our Ethics Series this year will be offered virtually on Thursday, September 15th from 12:00-1:00pm focusing on Ethics and Artificial Intelligence. We are joined by Massey Alum Jamie Duncan, E. Stefan Kehlenbach U of T Postdoctoral Fellow working on the Governance of Emerging Technologies Group and Junior Fellow Alexandra Martin. Also, on September 15th from 5:00-6:30pm, join us for a special conversation and reception celebrating visual arts and print culture. Ivan McFarlane, beloved Massey community member who passed away in 2020, was an important force behind many a book club held at the college. He is memorialized in a portrait by Gordon Shadrach now featured at the entry to the Upper Library. We will be joined by two artists – Gordon Shadrach and Aaron Jones in conversation with Sarah Robayo Sheridan about their exhibited works.

High Tables are a time-honoured tradition at Massey. Online RSVPs are now open for our first High Table of the year. Our Welcome High Table will take place on Friday, September 16th at 6:00pm. We look forward to sharing a special meal and introducing new community members throughout the year.

In advance of High Table, we will gather in the Quadrangle for our annual formal group photo. Current Senior Fellows, Quadrangle Society Members, Journalism Fellows, Visiting Scholars, Senior Residents and the 2022-2023 Junior Fellows – please mark your calendars for 5:00pm to come to the Quad. This will be the first time in three years that we will come together to do this, so it will be a photograph for the history books!

On Sunday, September 18th the Junior Fellows will hold their first Junior Fellow Lecture Series. This is a recurring event where Junior Fellows speak to a certain theme from their area of research/expertise. It is a great way to meet new Junior Fellows and hear what their research interests are. A reminder that Laughing with the Trickster: On Sex, Death and Accordions will be broadcast on CBC Radio’s IDEAS and CBC Listen starting Nov. 14, 2022, and is available as a book from House of Anansi Press.

The 7th annual Ursula Franklin Forum is taking place on Tuesday, September 27th from 1:00-5:00pm in honour of the late Dr. Ursula Franklin. This year’s forum is on Space, Science and Society. Dr. Juna Kollmeier Senior Fellow and Director CITA University of Toronto will present Our Galileo Moment and our Cosmic Future.

INDIGENOUS HERITAGE PROGRAMMING   

From September 30th through October 19th, we will be holding several Indigenous-themed programs. Programming begins with a ceremony to mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th at 11:00am and will culminate in our Music Salon featuring Indigenous Musicologist and Polaris Prize Winner, Jeremey Dutcher, on Wednesday, October 19th. Our Indigenous Heritage High Table will take place on Friday, October 14th.

SAVE THE DATE 

  • Journalist & Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Maria Ressa, at Massey – October 21st, 2022 
  • Tickets are available now to this special event in conversation with Maria Ressa. Guests who purchased tickets to the 60th Anniversary of the William Southam Journalism Fellowship Gala in April, when Maria was prevented from attending, will receive complimentary tickets to this event. For those of you who missed the Gala in April, tickets for this event are available for purchase, here.  
  • The Massey Grand Rounds Symposium and Janet Rossant Lectureship will take place on Wednesday, October 12th.  

COMMUNITY NEWS 

Senior Fellows Payam Akhavan, Sonia Anand, Miriam Diamond, David Malkin and Writer-in-Residence David Chariandy have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada. Senior Fellow Aisha Ahmad has been elected to the College of the RSC. Congratulations all!

The Bibliography Room will be participating in the Fisher Library’s biennial Small & Fine Press Fair on Saturday, September 10th from 10:00am-5:00pm. Back for the first time in three years, Massey College will be present alongside Aliquando Press, Art Metropole, Book*hug, Coach House Books, George A. Walker, k|f|b, and many many more!  

This event is free and open to the public.

I am happy to participate in Les faits d’abord, a Radio-Canada production providing an overview of politics in Canada, every Saturday afternoon this fall.
