The latest episode of The JCR: A Massey Podcast is out now. Speaking Truth to Power features a conversation between JF alumni, Cheng Xu, a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Toronto who is studying rebel movements in the Philippines and award-winning journalist Patricia Evangelista about her new book, Some People Need Killing: A Memoir of Murder in My Country.

20 NOV 9:00am – 4:45pm : United for Justice Conference: War Crimes Against Ukrainian Children

In light of the illegal and systematic deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children to the Russian Federation – war crimes under the Rome Statute that may also constitute crimes against humanity and genocide – the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, Global Affairs Canada, Massey College, and the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights have partnered to advance justice and accountability for victims of Russia’s war of aggression. Led by Massey Chair in Human Rights, Payam Akhavan, speakers will include:

Massey alumna Eve Egoyan is an internationally acclaimed artist whose medium is the piano. She constantly expands the sound range of her instrument, and more recently has extended it into the visual, performing on a digitally augmented acoustic piano. Join us for an evening with this remarkable artist, in conversation with musicologist and Quadrangle Society Member Hannah Chan-Hartley.

24 NOV 11:00 am: POWER TO THE ARTS SYMPOSIUM 

Come to celebrate a range of artistic disciplines, as well as reimagine the power relationships between arts and culture creators, various levels of government, private sector supporters, and the general public. Join us to reflect on Massey College’s historical link through Vincent Massey and the Massey Report; an important national conversation that Massey College can continue to broker as it enters its seventh decade.

We will also pay tribute to the life and legacy of Quadrangle Society Member Peter Herrndorf, who was a beloved member of our community, a mentor and and gave so much to the arts and arts administration in Canada.

Join us for a special High Table, the first ever dedicated to celebrating the arts, hosted by William Southam Journalism Fellow Garvia Bailey and with musical guest Sarah Slean.

I will analyze Frank Underhill’s 1963 Lecture The Image of Confederation.


28 NOV 5:00pm: Massey Dialogues: The Crisis in Affordable Housing: Lessons from Regent Park

Regent Park, Toronto’s oldest and largest public-housing community, is the site of a 20-year experiment in urban redesign. With three of five stages nearly complete, the project may offer lessons for building affordable housing and stable communities elsewhere. Join the conversation with Senior Fellow Armine Yalnizyan, VP Social Impact at Daniels Heela Omarkhail and Senior Development Manager at Tridel Bryan-Howard Sherwood. Moderated by Massey Junior Fellow Alum Drew Kauffman.


29 NOV 6:30pm: Alumni Dinner for 1963-1975 Cohort

We will have the first Alumni Dinner of the year as part of formal dinner in Ondaatje Hall. Alumni from 1963-1975 are invited to gather and everyone is invited to join.


30 NOV 10:00am : Cooperation, Stability, and Security in the Arctic? Strategies for Moving Forward

This full-day conference brings together national and international expert panels to address the question: how can we engage Russia in the shared pursuit of pan-Arctic security, stability and cooperation, while still holding it to account for its egregious violation of the international order in invading Ukraine? The conference will focus on prospects for enhancing cooperation rather than on defining problems.  


HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES & OUR ANNUAL LITERARY COMPETITION

A reminder that our annual literary competition is open! Members of the community are invited to turn your hand to a bit of creativity and whimsy to celebrate the season of fellowship and good will. You can enter in either (or both) of two categories: Limericks or Haiku. The subject should be the 60th anniversary of the College – of course!

The rules:

  • All members of the community are eligible.
  • One entry per person per category.
  • Entries should be sent news@masseycollege.ca, with the subject heading ‘2023 Literary Competition.’
  • The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, December 6, 5:00pm.

The prizes:

  • Winner in each category: A Massey swag bag full of masseywear, notebook and a signed first edition of The Age of Insecurity.
  • Runner-up in each category: Your choice of selected books from the Massey archive. 

The judge will be Massey College alum and book historian Claire Battershill.
The winners will be announced at the Winter Gaudy on December 9.

AWARDS

Junior Fellow Lizbeth Ayoub graduated from the PhD program at the Faculty of Dentistry where she specialized in pain research and neuroimaging. Congratulations!

NEWS 

  • Staff member Mujtaba Haris presented his research at the Bringing Afghanistan to Scale conference held at University of Oxford on China’s Geospatial Interests in Afghanistan, China-Taliban relationship, The Belt and Road Initiative BRI and regional politics and security dynamics.  
  • Junior Fellow Boran Kumral co-authored “Defect Engineering of Graphene for Dynamic Reliability” now published in Small with open access. In this work, they revealed that a mild concentration of point defects in graphene can increase its adhesion to flexible substrates and constrain damage propagation within the 2D lattice under mechanical loading. Read it here.    
  • Senior Fellow and Governing Board Member Jillian Kohler was just accepted to be a member to the WHO EURO Access to Novel Medicines Platform (NMP), Group 3 Sustainability, where she will focus on corporate governance issues. 
  • Senior Fellow and Governing Board Chair Akwasi Owusu-Bempah featured in the Toronto Star, read it here
