I am pleased to announce the arrival of our Judge-in-Residence: Andromache Karakatsanis. She will arrive on October 23 and be meeting with Junior Fellows and members of the community throughout the week.
This year, we will mark Islamic Heritage Month with our annual Muslim Heritage High Table. Federal Minister of Justice and Attorney General The Honourable Arif Virani; along with Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s first Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, will both give remarks. We will also recognize several outstanding Muslim Canadians. Please join us on this important occasion.
MASSEY IS LUNCH
Supporting and connecting with Junior Fellows is key to the Massey community. The easiest – and one of the most fun – way to do this is to participate in the “Massey is Lunch” program where Senior Members of the college are paired with a group of Junior Fellows to have an engaging lunch in Ondaatje Hall.
Indigenous Heritage Celebration High Table
The evening included impactful remarks from MayorOlivia Chow, Gimaa Laforme and former AFN Grand Chief Phil Fontaine. We also announced Junior Fellow Emma Avery as the recipient of the 2023 Dr. Malcolm King Scholarship. Please see below for the jury citation, and congratulations again Emma!
Emma Avery is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Resident at the University of Toronto. Her current research interests include increasing equitable access health care to Indigenous, LGBTQ* and low resourced communities. Emma has won several humanitarian and scholastic awards and has presented her research internationally.
Emma’s project is a needs assessment for Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) to determine whether providing local ambulatory surgical care to the remote community of NAN would be beneficial in addressing health care disparities seen in the region, by reducing the need for medical travel. Many of the NAN communities are remote (i.e., fly in only) leading to similar disparities in health care access and provision seen in other remote Canadian regions with predominantly Indigenous populations.
Thank you, Emma. Congratulations on your achievement and we look forward to hearing how your project unfolds over the next year.
