News and Events

Thanks to so many of you for sharing your tributes of Principal Emeritus Hugh Segal following his passing last week.

The Segal family will be receiving friends at the Robert J. Reid & Sons Funeral Home (309 Johnson Street in Kingston ON) on Thursday, August 17 between 4-7pm. Funeral Services for close family and friends will be held at Grant Hall, Queens University on Friday, August 18 at 1pm.

A public celebration of Hugh’s life is to be announced, and we will share those details when we have them. In addition, on September 19, Massey College will host an event celebrating and exploring some of Hugh’s intellectual contributions to Canada. More details to be shared soon.

TRIBUTES TO HUGH SEGAL

Massey’s Chair of Public Policy Tom Axworthy wrote about the visionary, advocate and spreader of joy that was Hugh Segal.

Among the many who wanted to share their admiration for Hugh Segal:

“I am lucky to have been a small part of Hugh’s post-politics life. He brought such energy, wisdom, opportunities & that classic Montreal humour to those around him. And the stories. He told the best stories. Grateful for all the books on my shelf he wrote & the ones he let me steal.” – Jennifer Bonder, alum

“He radiated kindness and belief in the power of people to make their communities better and he lived a life of true public service that is so rare. We were so lucky at Massey to have been served by him.” – Lily Cho, Senior Fellow

“Gosh, where do I start…he meant so much to me.” – Adrian De Leon

“Hugh Segal lived a life of purpose, built on a foundation of principles, advanced with passion, and leavened with infectious good humour. He loved his family, enriched the lives of his friends, and made a singular contribution to politics and public policy in Canada. Much loved.” – Bill Fox, Senior Fellow

“He was one of the most endearing, earnest, yet diplomatic people I’ve had the privilege of knowing. In a few years, he transformed Massey in the most meaningful ways. We took in everything he said because he was incredibly engaging and funny. He always had a witty joke or anecdote ready to go, and his laugh was infectious. He will be dearly missed.” – Niyosha Keyzad, alum

“Whether it was meeting a former Quebec premier in the PDR or hearing a Reagan ambassador recount anecdotes about Gorbachev, he made the field seem alive and a place one could have a career in without losing one’s head. He will be missed.” – Alex Kostenko, alum
“I feel very lucky to have been a Junior Fellow during Hugh’s tenure as Principal. He made me feel like I belonged there from the start. A warm, wise presence, and full of wonderful stories. A huge loss.” – Avnee Paranjape, alum

“A wonderfully happy warrior, and a beacon of civility in the House, on the campaign trail, in debate and beyond, he will indeed be missed…” – Andrea Geddes Poole, alum

“I’ll always remember his laugh and his smile.” – Rena Roussin, Junior Fellow

“I was so thrilled and honoured to be selected as a York-Massey scholar and I enjoyed many fun chats with Hugh especially because (a) my dad was a huge fan of his (b) he was instrumental in creating Fulbright Canada and (c) he was up for anything including asking me to host Thomas King and then serving as our guest speaker for a Fulbright Canada event! My time at Massey was all the richer because he was at the helm for my tenure. I am truly saddened for his family.” – Gabrielle Slowey, Visiting Scholar alum

“I only knew Hugh post politics, at Massey College, but he oozed commitment to something larger than himself in everything he did.” Richard Warnica, Journalism Fellow alum
