The William Southam Journalism Fellows are an integral part of the Massey College community. Since 1962, the program has gathered over 250 esteemed Canadian and international journalists for an academic year of education, reflection, and fellowship.
Applications must include a professional biography, current CV, a statement of intent explaining why you wish to be considered for a Fellowship and what course(s) of study you feel will contribute most to your professional development, how you would benefit from the multidisciplinary environment at Massey College, and how you would contribute to the Massey community. We also ask for three samples of recent work and the names of two referees that will provide reference letters.
Massey College is committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and advancing equality – we encourage journalists from traditionally excluded and marginalized groups to apply. Applications for the 2026/2027 academic year are now open. Deadline: March 31, 2026 at midnight.
Blaise Eyong is a Cameroonian multimedia journalist with over a decade of experience. He has contributed to several international news networks, including CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, DW and Reuters, often reporting in hostile environments. In particular, he has reported on the Boko Haram insurgency, the separatist armed conflict in the west of Cameroon and the long-standing political climate. Risking his life and his freedom, Blaise’s courageous journalism brings to light important events in a harsh environment.
Owen Guo is a freelance journalist in Toronto. He’s written about immigration, North America’s response to COVID-19 and the 2025 Canadian federal election. Born and raised in China, he reported for The New York Times between 2015 and 2018. He has also freelanced for the Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Al Jazeera English, the BBC, the Washington Post, and NPR, among others. A graduate of the Munk School’s global affairs program, he’s currently exploring a book project on Canadian niceness.
Pacinthe Mattar is an independent journalist, writer and producer. Born in Egypt and raised between Canada, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E, she spent a decade at the CBC producing for national radio and television programmes. In 2021, she received a National Magazine Award for her feature essay, “Objectivity Is A Privilege Afforded to White Journalists.” She was the 2022 Martin Wise Goodman Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and the 2023 Asper Fellow in Media at Western University.
Jordan Michael Smith is a Contributing Writer at The New Republic. His writing has appeared in print and online for many publications in Canada and the United States, including the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Maclean’s, the New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Harper’s. His essay on Arabs and Jews in Canada won the 2024 Dalton Camp Award from FRIENDS of Canadian Media, and he won the Richard J. Margolis Award for Social Justice Journalism in 2023.
Vinita Srivastava is an award-winning journalist and educator, blending expertise in news media with higher education for over two decades. From her early work as a research editor at The New York Times Magazine to her current roles as senior culture editor at The Conversation Canada and executive producer and host of Don’t Call Me Resilient podcast (2024 Anthem Gold Medal winner), she is committed to telling stories that challenge the status quo and spotlight voices long overlooked in mainstream media.
William Southam Journalism Fellows are outstanding Canadian journalists in mid-career who are invited to spend a year at Massey College, a graduate college within the University of Toronto. The objective of the fellowship program is to encourage improvement in journalism, offering journalists an opportunity to broaden their horizons by studying in a university setting.
Fellows are selected by a committee appointed by the President of the University and the Principal of Massey College. They are chosen for professional competence and future potential as effective and responsible journalists.
Three or more fellowships for Canadian journalists are awarded annually, tenable for one academic year, September to May.
Applicants must be full-time news or editorial employees with Canadian newspapers, news services, radio, television, or magazines, with at least five years’ experience. Freelance journalists working consistently in the media over a five-year period are also eligible.
Fellows enrol in any graduate or undergraduate courses, and have access to the full facilities of the University. There are no educational prerequisites for a Fellowship. Fellows do not receive credits or degrees for work done during the year.
The academic program typically combines general education with concentration in at least two courses; one course must be taken in full and all assignments completed.
In a parallel extra-curricular program, the Fellows meet regularly for informal seminars to discuss contemporary issues with guests invited from a wide variety of professions.
To obtain the maximum benefit of the program, the successful candidates agree to refrain from all professional work, including writing and broadcasting, during the period of the Fellowship. Personal holidays or travel is restricted to University holiday periods. Those selected are appointed Fellows-at-Large at the University of Toronto, with all the privileges of a Senior Resident at Massey College.
Fellows are invited, throughout the fellowship, to create a piece of reportage (in the format of their choice) that reflects Massey’s academic pursuits. Fellows will be expected to share their work through publication on the Massey College website.
The Fellowships underwrite: (1) A stipend of $4,900 per month, for the eight-month university year, from September to April; (2) All university fees; (3) Travel expenses up to the cost of economy air fare to and from Toronto for the Fellow; (4) Travel expenses for organized trips during the program.
If you are interested in the Gordon N. Fisher/JHR Journalism Fellowship, please see the information and application instructions below.
The Gordon N. Fisher / JHR Journalism Fellowship at Massey College runs in tandem with the William Southam Journalism Fellowships, offering one journalist from Sub-Saharan Africa or the Middle East an opportunity to broaden their horizons through a year of academic study at the University of Toronto. Funded by the Alva Foundation in memory of Gordon N. Fisher, former president and CEO of Southam Inc., the Fellowship is delivered in partnership with Journalists for Human Rights (JHR).
Fellows enjoy full access to the University of Toronto’s academic resources and may enrol in any undergraduate or graduate courses. While the program carries no formal prerequisites and does not grant academic credit, Fellows typically pursue broad intellectual exploration alongside more focused study in at least two courses, completing all requirements for one of them.
Outside the classroom, Fellows take part in an extra-curricular seminar series featuring distinguished guests from journalism, public life, and academia. As part of the immersive nature of the program, Fellows agree to refrain from professional work during the Fellowship and limit personal travel to official university holiday periods. They are appointed Fellows-at-Large at the University of Toronto and enjoy the full privileges of a Senior Resident at Massey College.
Throughout the year, Fellows are invited to produce an original piece of reportage—using any journalistic format—that reflects or engages with Massey’s academic community. This work will be shared on the Massey College website.
The Fellowship provides:
A stipend of $4,900 per month for eight months (September–April);
Payment of all University of Toronto fees;
Round-trip economy airfare to and from Toronto;
Travel expenses for organized program trips.
