PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Massey College supports the emergence of the next generation of public intellectual leaders through the development of five skills: being able to engage the public engagement on complex ideas, acting as an ethical and inclusive leader, cultivating the ability to participate in international networks, demonstrating the ability to develop an interdisciplinary approach and engaging in practices of well-being.

PILLAR 1: BE ABLE TO ENGAGE THE PUBLIC ON COMPLEX IDEAS

Overall Objectives:

  • To communicate effectively and engage the general public in discussion of complex ideas through a variety of mediums
  • Describe the purpose and impact of your research
  • Develop skills in moderating and organizing panels and dialogues
  • Anticipate and respond to questions on the impact of your research

IMPORTANT DATES - 2024 -25

Pillar 1:

Kim Kierans is an Inglis professor (emerita)  at the University of King’s College, Halifax and a Senior Fellow and resident at Massey College. Her book Journalism for the Public Good: The Michener Awards at 50 was published in May 2024 by Bighorn Books, University of Calgary Press. She worked for 30 years in journalism as a reporter, news editor, associate producer and presenter at CBC and newspapers. She taught at the University of King’s College for 24 years and served as King’s vice-president (2010-2017) and director of the School of Journalism (2003-2010). She was a visiting professor in the Communication Department at the Asian Center for Journalism at Ateneo de Manila University for 15 years. Her audio documentaries have been broadcast on CBC Ideas, The Current and Maritime Magazine. Along with writing for various publications, she co-published Asia Media Innovators II (2010) and co-edited The New Journalist (2010). She has an honours degree in classics from Dalhousie/King’s, an MA in Atlantic Canada Studies from St. Mary’s University and a DCL (hon) from King’s. Her research interests include community media, concentration of media ownership and the pedagogy of online learning.
 
Breaking out of your silo: Sharing your research with a wider public. The panel of academics and media practitioners will offer advice on how to find the right venue or outlet for your research and answer your questions about idea proposals. October 7th 5:00-6:15pm
 
Hit the target with plain language. This panel of academics and media practitioners will focus on the art of clear writing for a wider audience. November 11th 7:30-9:00pm
 
Putting your best face forward: Presentation. This panel of academics and media practitioners will talk about how to prepare for and then speak with the media for a news story, interview or on a panel. January 22nd 5:00-6:15pm
 
Take control: Build your brand on social media. This panel of academics and experts will talk about social media platforms and building an audience for your research. Feb 10th  7:30-9:00pm
 
Taking your research on the road. This panel of academics will share how to leave a lasting impression at conference presentations, job talks, and public events. March 10th 7:30-9:00pm 

Pillar 2:

Peter Sloly is Massey College’s Visiting Fellow, Change-Maker-In-Residence to advance cultural and organizational change within the College while also implementing leadership development initiatives for the Junior Fellows. Peter as a professional athlete, a Deloitte partner, and a police officer who rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police. Peter is a dynamic speaker with vast experience and expertise in justice sector modernization, organizational culture change, and integrated human services operations for community safety and well-being strategies.  He is also a champion for human rights and privacy rights as well as for diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-discrimination. Peter’s career took him to five continents and over fifty countries. Peter is a recipient of the United Nations and Canadian Peacekeeping medals. He was invested as an “Officer of the Order of Merit” (Police Forces) by Canada’s Governor General. He has an MBA and a Sociology BA. Peter’s professional mission is to develop ethical change leaders, socially just communities, smart safe cities, and inclusive sustainable societies. His personal motto is “others before self, compassion for all”.

Meeting of the Minds Mentoring Event 

Wednesday October 30 from 5:30-7:45pm in the JCR and Dining Hall
Participants of the Meeting of the Minds program are invited to a reception and formal dinner in the Dining Hall. Join us to meet with your mentee/ mentor and get to know other participants of the program.
