60th Anniversary of the William Southam Journalism Fellowships

2022 marks the 60th Anniversary of the William Southam Journalism Fellowships.

On Saturday, April 23rd Alumni of the Journalism Fellowships are invited to the College to connect with their cohort year over lunch in Ondaatje Hall.

The entire Massey Community is invited to attend two media issues panels in the afternoon, a cocktail reception and a gala dinner which will include a keynote from Nobel Peace Prize winner – Philippine journalist Maria Ressa as well as a presentation of the 2022/2023 incoming William Southam Journalism Fellows. The gala dinner will take place at the Toronto Reference Library – 789 Yonge Street. 

Gala Dinner Tickets – $200.00 each. Please note that charitable tax receipts will be issued for the cost of the gala ticket less the fair market value of the event.

In accordance with current University of Toronto regulations, all members of our community and guests who come into Massey College premises or attend Massey College events, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and are required to provide proof of vaccination.

    Maria Ressa

    Maria Ressa has been a journalist in Asia for 36 years. As Rappler’s co-founder and CEO, she has endured constant political harassment and arrests by the Duterte government. For her courage and work on disinformation and ‘fake news,’ Maria was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, named Time Magazine’s 2018 Person of the Year, was among its 100 Most Influential People of 2019, and has also been named one of Time’s Most Influential Women of the Century. She’s a nominee for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize and is a co-founder of The Real Facebook Oversight Board. She was also part of BBC’s 100 most inspiring and influential women of 2019 and Prospect magazine’s world’s top 50 thinkers, and has won many awards for her contributions to journalism and human rights. Before founding Rappler, Maria focused on investigating terrorism in Southeast Asia. She opened and ran CNN’s Manila Bureau for nearly a decade before opening the network’s Jakarta Bureau, which she ran from 1995 to 2005. She wrote Seeds of Terror: An Eyewitness Account of al-Qaeda’s Newest Center of Operations in Southeast Asia and From Bin Laden to Facebook: 10 Days of Abduction, 10 Years of Terrorism.
