How will AI shape Toronto’s Start-up Landscape – A panel discussion brought to you by The Massey Venture Society

Amidst recent concerns about AI, one critical fact is often overlooked: building a thriving AI-driven startup ecosystem is central to Canada’s 21st-century economic vision.

The Massey Venture Society invites you to join a conversation exploring how Canada’s unique approach to AI could shape Toronto’s startup landscape—and what role the Massey community might play in this vision.

Whether you’re considering launching an AI-focused startup or are simply curious about Canada’s evolving AI landscape, join us for a Massey Dialogues-style discussion with a panel of experts in AI policy, academia, and venture investing.

Panelists:

Patrick Tammer is a Senior Investment Director at Scale AI, the AI investment fund of the Canadian Government, where he oversees a $125M+ portfolio of AI innovation projects. As an advisor to business executives, startups and the Canadian Government, he is directly working on the transformative impact of AI on our economy and society. He is also a Steering Committee Member of the Canadian Centre for the Innovation Economy (CCIE) and an Editor for the Journal of Business and Artificial Intelligence. Patrick previously worked as a Management Consultant with the Boston Consulting Group, as Portfolio Manager for the impact investor LEAP and as a Program Analyst for the UN Development Program.

Kevin Bryan is an Associate Professor, Strategic Management Area. His work primarily consists of applied theoretical and empirical analyses of innovation and entrepreneurship. Among other questions, he has investigated why firms may do R&D on socially inefficient research projects (including during the Covid-19 pandemic), how startups find early employees and decide where to locate, when and why acquisitions of high-growth startups may be worrying for antitrust, how artificial intelligence can profitably used alongside human workers, what types of science are most useful for inventors in industry, and how rideshare networks function when they compete with each other. His work has been published in the Journal of Economic Theory, the Review of Economics and Statistics, Research Policy, and the University of Chicago Law Review.

Hassan Bhatti is a technology entrepreneur with a track record of commercializing deep-tech projects into successful businesses. Currently, he leads the healthcare vertical for the Snowflake Marketplace, is an investment partner at Community Fund, is a co-founder and board member of Semantic Health, a seed-stage healthcare start-up in the revenue cycle management space, and is an active angel investor across the globe.

Limited seats are available in the Private Dining Room for a dinner with the panelists at 6:15pm. If you are interested in attending the dinner, please email Anne-Marie Fowler to reserve a spot, this is on a first come first served basis.
