Junior Fellows Lecture Series
Coming Tuesday January 26th at 6pm EST:
WAIT A MINUTE! …Live from the jaws of the shark…no actually, we’ll be on Zoom…
It’s the Junior Fellows Lecture Series!
We invite you to capture unforgettable moments from our next JFLS, as you pose your most photogenic questions to our brave and brilliant presenters:
Martine Lokken (Astronomy and Astrophysics) “In the Jaws of Dark Energy”
According to the current standard model of cosmology, about 4 billion years ago the universe was taken over by a mysterious force dubbed Dark Energy. This transition caused our universe to begin an era of accelerated expansion. This expansion is preventing the largest structures in the universe — superclusters — from further coalescing. But wait a minute (or a few billion years): before these structures ultimately get ripped apart by the jaws of dark energy, we have the opportunity to study them through observations and simulations. By doing so, we can slowly chip away at the biggest mysteries of our universe.
Paul Chen (Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry) “How you get COVID-19”
As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses towards perhaps its apex in Canada, insight into how SARS-CoV-2 spreads—and how to abate it—remains crucial. So, wait a minute (or 15) and join this timely JFLS talk, which covers why SARS-CoV-2 transmits effectively and discusses the comparative infectiousness of adults and children with COVID-19 as well as symptomatic, presymptomatic and asymptomatic infections.
Maddy De Welles (Disability Studies/Social Justice Education)
“Wait a minute… What’s that post telling me?
The practices of posting on the Down Syndrome Association Facebook Page”
Usually when we post something on social media, it’s because we want to draw attention to it. Sometimes, what we post is pretty common (like what we had for lunch). Other times it’s not (like getting eaten by a shark). In this JFLS talk, we will be looking at the practices of posting on the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto’s (DSAT) Facebook page, which appear to be kind and inclusive. It seems that you should wait a minute to post them. However, guided by disability studies and childhood studies, I’m suggesting that we need to consider how these posts have shaped common understandings of disability, and what the consequences of this are. We’ll be looking at three different posts from the DSAT page, all of which portray disability as a condition to overcome or include into the abyss of “sameness” (Titchkosky and Michalko, 2009; Garland-Thomson, 2005). So wait a minute… Let’s think about these posts.
