Round Table Discussion with Jodesz Gavilan – 2023 McLuhan Fellow from the Philippines
This event is open to the Massey College Community.
Join us for a round table session with Jodesz Gavilan – 2023 McLuhan Fellow from the Philippines. Jodesz is a researcher and writer with Rappler in the Philippines.
Jodesz Gavilan is a writer and researcher for Rappler and its investigative arm, Newsbreak. She covers the human rights and impunity beats, producing in-depth and investigative reports, particularly on the quest for justice of victims of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs and war on dissent. She also closely follows international bodies such as the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Jodesz was chosen as the Marshall McLuhan Fellow in 2023 by the embassy of Canada in the Philippines for her “unique commitment to investigative journalism, to informing the public about decisions and policies that affect their lives in support of the public interest… [and the] tenacity exhibited… and by the remarkable effort to illuminate the challenges, issues and people at the heart of every story.”
She obtained her journalism degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman and joined Rappler in 2014. Her first assignment was writing stories for Rappler’s #HungerProject, a platform that tackled poverty and malnutrition issues in the Philippines. She also hosts the weekly podcast, Newsbreak: Beyond the Stories, which aims to make sense of people, events, and controversies dominating the news cycle.
