So you’re the expert: how to talk to a Journalist

The phone rings. The email pings into your inbox. It’s a journalist — wanting to interview you. Finally, you can share your research with a wider audience. But how do you avoid getting stuck in the weeds of your deep research and make sure your knowledge and passion shine through?

Learn more at this interactive panel with Stephanie C. Mitchell and Senior Fellow, Dr. Paolo Granata who will share their expertise.

Biographies:

Stephanie C. Mitchell specializes in words. She works with lawyers, judges, and other senior professionals to help them communicate more effectively.

Stephanie’s love of words led her to study both law and journalism, and to pursue a career as a journalist with CBC Radio. This is where she learned that you only get one chance to capture the listener’s attention — and you can do that by giving a great performance and using the right words. Stephanie has also worked in law school administration and government communications.

Throughout her varied career, Stephanie keeps coming back to the importance of clear communication. She is thrilled to make this her full-time job now as a speaker and coach.

Stephanie is on a mission to make the world better — one word at a time.

Paolo Granata is an Associate Professor in Book and Media Studies at the University of Toronto. As an educator, an innovator, and a cross-disciplinary media scholar – nurtured by the century-old tradition of his Alma Mater, the University of Bologna – his research and teaching interests lie broadly in the areas of media ecology, media ethics, semiotics, print culture, and visual studies.

In 2019, he founded the Media Ethics Lab, a research hub that studies the ways that digital media practices and emerging technologies are marked by ethical issues and decisive political, societal, and cultural questions.

Professor Granata speaks regularly on the future of education. His aim is to raise public awareness about the role that Universities should play in the 21st century: to provide an environment of social cohesion; to create the conditions for sustainable development; and to strengthen participation in cultural life.

This is a Junior Fellow Professional Program Pillar 1 event. It is open to Junior Fellows and Connaught PhDs for Public Impact Fellows.
