This discussion will look trends in social media and how scholars are using them to build community and share research and ideas.
Kim Kierans will be joined by Senior Fellow David Nieborg (Associate Professor of Media Studies, Associate Chair, Research Program Director, Media Studies (MDS) & New Media Studies), Dr. Andrea Furlan (physician-scientist and Professor in the Department of Medicine at UofT) and Junior Fellow Evan Chan.
This event is open to current Junior Fellows and recent Alumni of Massey College.
Kim Kierans is an Inglis professor (emerita) at the University of King’s College, Halifax and a Senior Fellow and resident at Massey College.
Her book Journalism for the Public Good: The Michener Awards at 50 was published in May 2024 by Bighorn Books, University of Calgary Press.
She worked for 30 years in journalism as a reporter, news editor, associate producer and presenter at CBC and newspapers. She taught at the University of King’s College for 24 years and served as King’s vice-president (2010-2017) and director of the School of Journalism (2003-2010).
She was a visiting professor in the Communication Department at the Asian Center for Journalism at Ateneo de Manila University for 15 years.
Her audio documentaries have been broadcast on CBC Ideas, The Current and Maritime Magazine. Along with writing for various publications, she co-published Asia Media Innovators II (2010) and co-edited The New Journalist (2010).
She has an honours degree in classics from Dalhousie/King’s, an MA in Atlantic Canada Studies from St. Mary’s University and a DCL (hon) from King’s. Her research interests include community media, concentration of media ownership and the pedagogy of online learning.

Kim KieransSenior Fellow; Inglis Professor JournalismKim Kierans (DCL hon) is Inglis Professor emerita in the School of Journalism, Writing & Publishing at the University of King’s College, Halifax, where she taught for twenty-four years following a career in journalism. She is former King’s vice-president (2010-2017) and Director of the School of Journalism (2003-2010). Kierans is vice-chairperson of the federal Independent Advisory Board on Eligibility for Journalism Tax Measures. She sits on the advisory board of OxCo Academic Video in Oxford, UK, and the board of the Asian Center for Journalism at Ateno de Manila University. Kierans is a Senior Resident at Massey College.
