The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Threat or Opportunity?
Artificial Intelligence has rapidly emerged as one of the most transformative forces of our time—capable of solving complex problems while introducing new ethical challenges. This panel will explore the broader implications of AI, with a particular focus on how it is being used within Canada’s immigration system. The discussion will feature Kevin Newman, journalist and former anchor of Global National News; Gurpreet Malhotra, CEO of Indus Community Services; and Sara Maqsood, Junior Fellow and Co-Chair of the Massey Law Society. The conversation will be moderated by Don Gibson, Co-Chair of the Massey Ethics Program.

Sara Maqsood
Sara Maqsood is a Junior Fellow at Massey College and a recent J.D. graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. She has delivered community legal education for newcomers and refugee families through Downtown Legal Services and assisted faculty research on Charter rights and equity impacts in public policy. Her research experience includes work on the kafala guardianship system and barriers to adoption affecting Muslim families in Canada, examining discrimination concerns under the Charter. At Massey, she serves as Co-Chair of the Massey Law Society, helping organize student-led dialogues on ethics and public policy. Sara contributed to the International Human Rights Program’s Ring of Fire project on First Nations rights and resource development. She was nominated for the Clarkson Laureateship for Public Service. She is currently completing her articles at a corporate law firm, concentrating on corporate transactions. Her interests include the ethics of technology in public systems and equitable access to legal services.
