“It’s a hip hop world, and you’re just living in it,” says Dalton Higgins, Canada’s foremost expert on hip hop. Author of the acclaimed book Hip Hop World, which is carried in Harvard University’s hip hop archive and was nominated for the 2010 Hip Hop Scholar of the Year award by Washington DC’s WBLINC, Higgins joins us to talk about the impressive history of hip-hop music and the significant and expanding influence this genre has on culture today.

Dalton Higgins is a PR strategist & publicist, author of six books, festival producer, National Magazine Award-winning journalist, and TV/radio/podcast personality. His books—including the aforementioned Hip Hop World, the best-selling Far From Over: The Music and Life of Drake, and most recently, Rap N’ Roll: Pop Culture, Darkly Stated—have sold over 60,000 copies throughout North America, and he continues to contribute chapters and essays to a wide range of anthologies and textbooks focused on pop culture and technology.

Currently co-host of the Black Tea podcast (Rogers Media), Higgins was a long-time news reporter for Toronto’s Now Magazine and leading U.S. youth culture magazines The Source and Vibe Magazine. He has also worked as a producer on a vast number of broadcast and podcast initiatives throughout the USA and Canada, including CBC’s five-part This Is Not A Drake podcast series (Toronto), Urban Box Office’s indieplanet.com (NYC), and Shine.com (NYC/Toronto). He has a strong interest in promoting diversity, for instance as a former member of the Canada Council for the Arts Racial Equity Advisory Committee. He also supports many literacy initiatives, having conducted workshops with everyone from the NBA’s Toronto Raptors to the Toronto Public Library.
