Join the Massey Dialogues on Wednesday, March 23rd, on Infrastructure for the 21st Century from 4:00-5:00pm ET in the Upper Library or view online. I will speak with Catherine McKenna the former Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Principal and Founder Climate and Nature Solutions/Women Leading on Climate, Prof. Matti Siemiatycki Director of the Infrastructure Institute, and Senior Fellow Shoshanna Saxe Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Infrastructure about what infrastructure investment needs to look like in the 21st century.

I am pleased to introduce you all to Jennifer Drouillard Duce, our new Director of Advancement at Massey College. Jennifer comes from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine where she spent the last eight years in the role of Senior Development Officer, working with donors and faculty members to develop visionary gift opportunities that advanced health research and education.

Jennifer brings almost 25 years of fundraising experience, including twelve in major gifts. Before joining the University of Toronto, Jennifer worked as the Manager of Major and Planned Giving at Renascent Foundation and prior to this was a Campaign Manager at United Way of Guelph.

The College will, until April 30, continue to require proof of full vaccination to enter the College property, and require that our residents, members, staff and guests continue to wear masks in all common areas, unless eating or drinking. This is the Protocol at University of Toronto as well.

On March 30th from 4:00-5:00pm, the Massey Dialogues brings together an expert panel questioning how the far right is (mis)appropriating classical antiquity to push their political and ideological agenda? How should the field of Classics react to this phenomenon?  

Join Professor Jackie Murray and Professor Katherine Blouin, two international scholars of classical antiquity, and Jonathan Montpetit, an award-winning journalist specializing in far-right politics in North America, will examine the ways in which far right political groups draw from the literary and material culture of Ancient Greece and Rome in order to justify their political views. Moderated by Junior Fellow Vittorio Bottini

On April 6th join us for the Massey Dialogues from 4:00-5:00pm, in the Upper Library or virtually, in honour of National Siblings Day (on April 10). We will hear a rich discussion on the intersections of disability, care, accessibility, family, and sibling relationships along with the policy developments necessary to benefit sibling caregivers with Senior Fellow Liv Mendelsohn, Helen Ries of the National Sibling Collective, and Terrence Ho who is an advocate and caregiver.

In the evening on April 6th we will host a screening of In Search of a Better World the CBC documentary based on Payam Akhavan’s 2017 CBC Massey Lectures. A panel discussion will follow. It will be a great event, please join us.

On Thursday, April 7th at 1:00pm ET we are hosting a special Massey Dialogues in partnership with the Rotary Club Bay-Bloor Toronto exploring Conflict Prevention, Climate Change and Economic Development. This will be entirely online and in webinar format. Register to attend and participate here.

Also on Thursday April 7th, join us for the book launch of The Daily Plebiscite: Federalism, Nationalism and Canada by Senior Fellow David Cameron. David will be joined in conversation by Robert Vipond, the book’s editor.

Community News: 

Alumn Anjum Sultana has been selected as a member of Canada’s official delegation to the 66th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for 2022. The UNCSW will be held from March 14 to 25, 2022 both virtually and in New York City – you can read the announcement here.   

Senior Fellow Payam Akhavan was featured on CBC’s Front Burner for his work representing the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law.  You can listen to the episode here.  

Junior Fellow Georgia Hadjis recently participated in an event in partnership with the University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain (UTCSP), the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Dentistry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing entitled The Future of Pain. You can watch her presentation at the 31:30 mark here.   

We had a wonderful Holi celebration organized by the Junior Fellows last Friday. I include some pictures of the event below.
