AI and Human Societies: How AI Learns, Reasons, and Fails

What does it mean for an AI to learn or reason, and why can a system perform well on one task but struggle with another? Join the AI and Human Societies Group for our first seminar on what AI can do and how we judge its abilities. We’ll begin with a short introduction and examples of AI getting things right and wrong, then discuss the questions these raise. How do we distinguish understanding from a convincing answer? When should we trust a result? Members are encouraged to bring perspectives and examples from their own fields and experiences, ask questions, and challenge ideas. All College members are welcome, whether you work with AI regularly or are simply curious. No technical background or preparation is needed for this seminar.
