Film Screening and Conversation: Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising
Join us at Massey College for a special screening of Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising, a powerful documentary that brings to light a little-known chapter in Canadian history. In 1974, a group of Anishinaabe youth, led by Louis Cameron, occupied Anicinabe Park in Kenora, Ontario, in a courageous act of resistance against systemic racism, police brutality, poor living conditions, and the dispossession of Indigenous lands. Their nearly 40-day occupation helped galvanize the Indigenous rights movement in Canada and beyond.
Directed by Shane Belcourt and co-written by acclaimed Anishinaabe journalist and author Tanya Talaga, the film draws on firsthand accounts, archival material, and Cameron’s own words to reclaim this important history and explore its enduring relevance to Indigenous sovereignty, resistance, and justice.
Following the screening, Tanya Talaga will join Junior Fellow Kieran Rice for an interview and conversation about the film.
We invite the Massey community to join us for an afternoon of film, reflection, and meaningful dialogue.
