Ideas & Ideals: The Ethics of Civic Responsibility
What does it mean for a synagogue or a community institution to be a good citizen? In the 1960s and 1970s many people belonged to a civic organization – a church, a mosque, a synagogue, a lodge, or a secular group with common interests. We have seen the dissolution of that in favour of curated, of ten online ‘communities’ that are exclusive rather than inclusive. What have we lost? What can we gain with better communities? What does that look like? How might religious institutions lead and adapt to address these challenges?
