On Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 12:30 p.m., the William Southam Journalism Fellows welcome book publisher Patrick Crean for an informal, off-the-record lunch conversation in the Massey College dining hall. These weekly gathering offer an opportunity for the Massey community to connect with the journalism fellows and their guests to exchange ideas and discuss journalism, current affairs and the issues shaping our world.
Patrick Crean has been in the book publishing business for more than 50 years. He began his career in 1971 when he joined McClelland & Stewart as a junior editor. Over the years, he has edited both fiction and non-fiction at General Publishing, Somerville House, Key Porter, Thomas Allen (where he was the publisher for 12 years), and recently with his own imprint at HarperCollins Canada. He has worked with hundreds of authors, many of whom have won or been nominated for numerous literary awards, including winning three Giller Prizes and three Governor-General Awards, as well as two nominations for the Man Booker Prize. In 2003, Patrick was awarded the Editor of the Year Libris Award by the Canadian Booksellers Association. Since 2012, he has taught courses in Book Publishing at Ryerson University. He has been part of the professional outreach and mentorship program (Quadrangle Society) at Massey College, University of Toronto, since 2004. In 2024, Patrick was appointed to the Order of Canada.
